Understanding the complexities of human interaction with the environment
Sustainable development for the future relies on our understanding of how people access, consume and manage critical resources in particular places. Studying how people work together, interact with their physical environments, and respond to change helps us to predict future needs and prepare for them.
We research sustainable livelihoods in established and emerging economies. We study the dynamics of population change, living arrangements, and migration patterns. We look at the capacity of human communities to adapt their social systems to environmental change in the short and long term.
Importantly, we collaborate with biophysical and social scientists around the globe to build comprehensive, multidimensional knowledge that will inform the decisions of current and future generations about human development on this planet.
