Clockwise from top left: our 4WD Toyota Hilux 'field lab', the RAPTOR bus, and the 4WD bus.

We use our field vehicles to support our teaching and research activities.

They enable us to take students on remote field trips that would otherwise be logistically difficult or impossible to organise.

Our fleet includes:

  • a Toyota Hilux 'field lab'
  • a Nissan Navara Dual Cab
  • Toyota Landcruisers
  • an 18-seat RAPTOR bus
  • a 31-seat 4WD bus.

Field lab

Our Toyota Hilux field lab acts not only as a means of transport but also as a dedicated storage space.

It's also an invaluable charging facility for various field devices, such as GPS, mapping tablets, drones, magnetometers, portable radios, seismic stations and a portable XRF.

Effective teaching

Disciplines such as geological sciences rely heavily on field observations and inductive reasoning, and fieldwork is widely recognised as the most effective way of teaching undergraduates.

Our students get valuable hands-on experience at a range of fascinating locations, including the Mount Isa region, the Great Barrier Reef and the fossil fields of Dinmore, near UQ St Lucia.
