The aim of this project is to quantify Ar diffusion behaviour in natural hypogene and supergene alunite-group minerals by characterising the length-scale of diffusion in single crystals of different grain sizes and by using MDD (multi-diffusion domain) modelling to characterise noble gas release from mineral clusters that may contain variable crystallite sizes. This project will take advantage of the large number of samples previously dated by laser-heating 40Ar/39Ar geochronology at UQ's Argon Geochronology Laboratory to select the most suitable material for the recoil and diffusion studies. The results from this research project will significantly increase the reliability of geochronological experiments carried out in supergene K-bearing sulphates.
