The potential of the Mineral Liberation Analyser for the characterisation of airborne particulate matter
Mining operations are significant sources of airborne particulate matter (APM), and are especially notable for the quantity produced, the extent of the area affected and the toxicity of associated contaminants. To assess the potential human health impacts of APM, detailed physical and chemical characterisation is required. Michele Elmes' PhD research investigates the use of a Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) to analyse APM. If successful, this will be an important advancement in single particle techniques for the geochemical characterisation and assessment of the potential impact of airborne particulates.
