My research uses a case-study methodology to study the relationships between formal and informal financial practices in one informal settlement in Phnom Penh – Cambodia.  I explain the characteristics of the formal/informal interface in the context of financial practices for informal settlements upgrading, how it responds to social, cultural, political and economic conditions of cities in the global south, and reflect on the meaning of these relationships for planning theory and practice.
