My project focuses on the diverse ways in which climate change has impacted on humans through history. The project integrates both historical and scientific accounts of climate change to develop this as a factor in our understanding of the historical process. Overall the research focuses on responding to the following three question:

  1. How have historical societies attempted to adapt to or mitigate the effects of climate change?
  2. How have these effects or attempts to mitigate and adapt, changed or altered historical societies?
  3. Are there consistent political and social themes which are observed in societies exposed to the stressors of climate change?

Specifically these questions will be investigated across four themes in history, these are: conflict, migration, political order and commerce.
