This study aims to gain an understanding of the reasons why people choose to live collectively, the various types of collective communities around the world, the practical aspects that make up collectives and quantitatively compare Australian communities with collective living focus in contrast to mainstream Australian communities with separate family households. By furthering the pioneering study in this area it is hoped to provide municipalities, planners, developers information of the advantages of collective living so that it becomes part of the fabric of present and future societies.
