Tracy Crossingham's PhD research seeks to determine whether the Cenozoic hotspot volcanism of eastern Australia is a product of mantle plumes or a result of the unique structure and motion of the Australian plate. She will address this question using geochemistry, noble gases helium as a mantle tracer and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology to investigate the temporal and chemical changes in the hotspot magmas. She will then determine the depth of the magmas, their origin and the relationship between volcanism and the motion of the plate.
