The project seeks to utilise deep coal and coal waste tailings as the primary substrates for bioproduction of methane gas.

The process may be applied in situ to generate gas from stranded coal deposits, including abandoned coal mines and exhausted coal seam gas fields, or externally, to coal washery waste and spoils piles, to recover energy value.

The key outcomes will be the science and engineering requirements to implement methane recovery, and potentially regeneration, from these stranded coals, based on an investigation of the microbial communities and the chemical and physical parameters that control and determine methane evolution.
