Estimating and overcoming biodiversity losses embodied in mineral resource extraction and trade

Mineral demand is expected to increase with the technological development of economies, particularly those minerals necessary to facilitate the renewable energy transition. However, little is known about how and where the expansion of mining to meet this demand may impact biodiversity, or where drivers of these impacts will specifically originate. The overarching aim of this project is to quantify biodiversity losses associated with mineral resource extraction, directly and indirectly, and develop tools to avoid, minimise or mitigate them.
