Unprecedented access to basin-wide exploration data through the ACARP project C22028 – Rangal Coal Measures Supermodel – provides an opportunity to describe and characterise the sedimentary architecture of the Rangal Coal Measures (RCM) and adjacent strata to reconstruct the depositional system at the Permian Triassic boundary. Steve Wilson's PhD research will map and model the distribution and geometry of the burden units in order to define the upper boundary of the RCM. The results will provide a regional framework within which local geotechnical conditions encountered in the various mines can be better predicted and understood.
