This professional development workshop will introduce you to the basics of mineral and rock identification to support teachers in delivery of the new syllabus in Earth and Environmental Science.  This will cover aspects of the curriculum from Unit 1: Topic 2 Development of the Geosphere.

A second optional day will introduce rocks and stratigraphy in the field and explore the tectonic history of East Coast Australia.

10.15am - 10.30am MORNING TEA
10.30am - 12.30pm How to demonstrate mineral properties to your students and intro to rock types
12.30pm - 1.00pm LUNCH
1.00pm - 2.15pm Stratigraphy and the fossil record
2.15pm - 2.30pm AFTERNOON TEA
2.30pm - 4.00pm Practical ways of demonstrating the evidence for plate tectonics using secondary data and free mobile device apps/computer software 

 

About Professional development to support the new Earth and Environmental Science Curriculum

The School of Earth and Environmental Science has created two professional development workshops to introduce the basics of: 

  • soils analysis and the hydrosphere
  • earth materials and stratigraphy

An optional field day workshop will also be offered as part of the earth materials and stratigraphy session. 

These workshops will support teachers with the delivery of the new syllabus in Earth and Environmental Science.

Cost: $60 per session or $100 for combined earth materials and stratigraphy workshop and field day. Price includes all materials and catering.
