We’re a research hub that supports investigations in areas as diverse as earth, environmental, biological, archaeological, forensic and material sciences.

Among the most advanced of their kind in the world, our integrated facilities comprise the:

  • Radiogenic Isotope Facility
  • Stable Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory
  • Environmental Geochemistry Laboratory.

Our sophisticated analytical equipment enables multidisciplinary researchers from UQ, partner institutions, Government, industry and the community.

Our skilled staff have worked on a varied range of research projects, including:

  • tracking ancient human origins and migration
  • mapping coral mortality in the Great Barrier Reef
  • tracer studies of cave deposits to establish past climates.

We collaborate with research institutions, rather than duplicate, to maintain and further promote UQ and Queensland’s established international standing and reputation in the fields of isotope tracing and dating.

Our UQ-funded facilities have received support from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and Griffith University, and seen the development of the Brisbane Geochronology Alliance between UQ, Griffith University and QUT – with our facilities as the centrepiece.

The alliance seeks to leverage each research institution’s strengths to make Brisbane a global hub for isotope geochemistry and geochronology.

It also aims to expand technological development and research across traditional boundaries, and to encourage young researchers.
