Geoscience graduates reflect on rock solid careers over past 50 years

1 May 2018

Reflections on the changing face of the Australian resources sector over the past 50 years by three University of Queensland alumni have featured in a major industry journal.

An article by UQ alumni Bill Koppe, Peter Hayden and Bill Turner, all graduates from the 1960s equivalent of UQ’s School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, has been published in the Minerals Institute’s AusIMM Bulletin, and covers an era of “spectacular and volatile growth” in the Australian resources industry.

The article, entitled: “How lucky were we?” analyses the state of the geosciences and resources industry and contains career lessons and strategies the researchers say could be useful for today’s graduating geoscientists.

They discuss such factors as the geopolitical climate, markets, technology and societal attitudes, cycles of demand for resources and graduates, and career paths.
