Ancient corals yield knowledge to protect reefs

Ancient corals have provided evidence of the impact of human activity on the Great Barrier Reef since European settlement.

University of Queensland Professor Gregg Webb said coral samples taken along the Queensland coastline clearly link the arrival of Europeans in Australia, and associated sediment runoff, with coral mortality incidents. 

The researchers have confirmed efforts to reduce sediment runoff and improve water quality are an effective way of building the reef’s resilience for the future.
